Carpathian Mountains, Romania
Our projects are based on our driving principle: Restore, Nurture and Inspire.
NURTURE
We work closely with local communities around our plantations, ensuring reforestation efforts provide well-paid jobs for tree planters and musicians. A local workforce is employed for nurseries, planting, and sapling care. During Covid-19, we supported 51 vulnerable elders in Nucsoara village with food aid. Alongside ecological restoration, we promote cultural heritage through music, arts, and forest-themed fundraising events, engaging all generations in conservation. Our mission includes preserving traditional land management practices, rituals, and artistry.
RESTORE
We are leading a large-scale reforestation project in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, where we have planted 170,000 trees to restore degraded land and rebuild wildlife corridors. Romania's forests, home to diverse wildlife, have suffered from widespread deforestation, prompting urgent conservation efforts. Partnering with the Foundation Conservation Carpathia (FCC), we plant mixed-species trees in high-altitude areas where natural regeneration is unlikely. These trees are protected under European law, ensuring long-term forest recovery. Additionally, we have planted 100 oak trees at Cobor Biodiversity Farm to restore traditional pastureland while promoting sustainable land use and biodiversity conservation.
INSPIRE
Interbeing is a multi-media project celebrating Romania’s traditional music and landscapes, both of which are under threat. It blends traditional songs with electronic compositions and nature soundscapes, featuring 80-year-old singer Silvia Dan. Accompanied by film and photography, the project highlights local stories and environmental challenges. Winner of Cambridge University’s Endangered Landscapes Programme Art Prize in 2022, all album profits support landscape regeneration. The film is available on Waterbear, and the music can be streamed on Spotify. In 2023, with a second grant, we developed a live show performed at Făgăraș Fest in the Carpathian Mountains.
Every donation you make to Forests Without Frontiers supports the restoration of whole ecosystems, through planting and protecting trees, increasing biodiversity, supporting local communities, helping preserve indigenous knowledge, supporting nature-inspired music and art and educating younger generations.
